I’ve got a picnic in the park tomorrow with friends and wanted to bring something other than a salad, hummus or cheese plate. Berries are starting to spring up in the markets and my mint is growing out of control so I figured why not mix the two and make into popsicles to bring to the party? I’ve transported popsicles to a party once before (where they were a big hit) so I know what I need to bring to make them hold up for longer than the bike ride to get to the park…i.e. lots of ice and a cooler.

Last time around I made them in plastic cups but this time I was gonna make them right and so bought something I know I will use often….star-shaped popsicle molds!

Ingredients:

1 cup raspberries

1 cup blackberries

1 cup strawberries, sliced

1/3 cup sugar

1/3 cup water

2 TBL lemon juice

2 TBL fresh mint, minced

To Make:

Combine Berries in a bowl with the lemon juice and mint

Mash the mixture with a large wooden spoon for 30 seconds then let sit for half an hour to macerate

Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan and simmer until sugar is dissolved, let cool for 5 minutes and then combine with the macerated berry mixture

In blender, place berry mixture in and pulse twice to break up, then return to bowl

Carefully pour into plastic cups or popsicle molds and freeze for six hours

If popsicles are not unmolding easily, just run some hot water over them for a few seconds

Enjoy!

While checking out Instagram earlier this week I noticed a heavenly looking sandwich ready to be eaten by one of my favorite accounts, Immaculate Infatuation, accompanied by the following text….”Monday Italian sub delivery from @CoppaSandwiches, High quality #EatsAtTheDesk.” I immediately clicked on the link and found the source of this drool worthy meal….Coppa Sandwiches, an Italian sandwich shop based in NYC, they deliver classic Italian cold cut sandwich meals only on Mondays (for now).

For just ten dollars in downtown Manhattan (their delivery area is expanding), Coppa delivers a delicious sandwich (made with an italian baguette, prosciutto cotto, coppa, pepperoni and mortadella, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, vinaigrette and peppers), a bag of Cape Cod chips, Brooklyn Brine pickles, and an Italian soda of the day right to your door. It’s their version of the classic school lunch where they don’t allow any substitutions and only accept cash (and make sure to tip your delivery person).

Just follow the easy steps and soon enough you’ll be enjoying this great deal….

Step 1 – Use the form or Text 646 673 0004. Delivery starts at 11am. They begin taking orders at 10am.

Step 2 – Give them your name, quantity, cross streets, and approximate time of hunger

Step 3 – Be patient….you must be patient!

*Please note that they may sell out or you may be out of their delivery zone

Thank you Immaculate Infatuation for posting the photo and introducing me to this great concept. You better believe that I’ll be ordering a Coppa Sandwich right at ten am this Monday!

Last night I had the pleasure to dine at Little Prince, the new french restaurant in the South Village/Soho from Chef Paul Denamiel (of Le Rivage) with my dear friend Susan. This little square of a space near the west end of Prince Street has a very contemporary feel, white washed brick walls, painted tile floor, plush tan banquettes and huge windows that open out onto Prince Street. Serving classic bistro fare with a few twists, THIS is the place to be.

The menu is full of french classics such as moules frites, sole meuniere, frisee aux lardon salad, etc but I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the one dish everyone was talking about…..the French Onion Soup Burger! It’s a thick medium rare patty served on a toasted English Muffin and topped with Caramelized Onions, Emmenthal Cheese and Dijon, and then capped off with a French Flag sticking out from the top of a pickled onion and gherkin.

When I love eating something I normally scarf it down like a crazed lunatic but for the first time in, well forever, I savored this burger. I took a few bites, then set it down and ate a few fries or the side of glazed carrots we ordered, then went back for another bite or two, repeating the process until the entire thing was gone (which happened in roughly five to six minutes). I can’t wait to see my friend Rev of Burger Conquest this weekend and tell him all about it because he has to drop everything and check this thing out asap!

While I’ve only been there once, I’m just gonna go ahead and say it….Little Prince is my idea of the perfect restaurant. From the hug I received from the maitre’d (he remembered me from when I enthusiastically made a reservation in person last week), to the super friendly service, reasonable prices and unbelievable food…Little Prince is going to see a lot of me. They open up for lunch and brunch in the next week so, in the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger, I’LL BE BACK!

A few weeks ago I was invited to join the Chinatown/Little Italy food tour with Ahoy New York Food Tours and with my sister coming in town this past weekend figured it was the perfect way for me to show her around one day!

Armed with a coffee and umbrella (there was a threat of rain) we met our group just outside of the Kam Man Grocery Store on Canal Street with a bottle of water in tow and comfortable walking shoes. The tours are small (roughly ten people) so it’s very intimate and you can really hear and experience everything amongst the crowds. What I love about this tour is that you aren’t one of those annoying big groups that crowds the sidewalks and takes photos of everything you see.

For three hours we were at the hungry mercy of Alana, our tour guide, who was extremely informative, friendly and personable. Her knowledge is evident from the get-go as she enthusiastically shares colorful stories of famous happenings and notorious residents in between food stops. Those tasting included Prosciutto and Homemade Mozzarella at Alleva, Italian Cheese at Di Palo’s, Pizza at Grand Appetito, Cannolis at Ferrara Bakery, Noodles at Pongsri, Dumplings at Tasty Dumpling, and Egg Rolls at Nom Wah Tea Parlor. With the exception of a sit down tasting at Pongsri, each stop was quick (but not rushed) and offered a good-sized tasting of the food item. With the exception of the pizza stop, the restaurants were great places that offer a tasty snapshot of the great food you can eat in the neighborhood (Nom Wah was my favorite).

Her tour was a perfect mix of walking, tasting and information visiting historical sites, hidden gems and staples businesses, some who have been there for over 100 years! Armed with a map and coupons, you’re encouraged to double back after the tour and enjoy the discounts offered at the places we visited, enjoy a more complete meal or just explore! We had to rush to a birthday party so I’ve kept the guide and will be heading back this weekend to do some shopping

I’ve explored and hung out in Little Italy and Chinatown many times before and thought I knew a lot about the area but Alana’s tour helped me truly learn and know the history and hidden secrets! Whether you are visiting New York or live here, this is a must for both! I was amazed at how fast three hours went by and how much I learned. Alana helped make my sisters visit that much more special and I enjoyed trading stories of what we know about the area, the food we both love, and the New York books we enjoy reading. And yes my tour was comped but at just $49 this is an incredible deal and a great way to learn more about this fabulous city! Take a bite out of the Big Apple with Ahoy New York Food Tours!

Well crepe chain restaurant, Vive la crêpe has a deal right up my alley. They’ve got nearly two dozen types of crepes (both savory and sweet) and on Tuesdays you can enjoy their delicious Nutella crepe for just $5 (regularly $7.50)! They’ve got four locations in the city and a fifth on the way so they make it pretty easy to get your fix!

Last week I was invited to try out Boukies new lunch menu but seeing as I have a day job and all asked if I could try dinner instead . They happily obliged and with my friend Emily in tow we hit up Boukies in the East Village for a long overdue girls night.

(image via Thrillist)

The decor was lovely; perfect lighting with tabletop lamps scattered about, varied and very comfortable seating options (booths, tables and banquettes), and despite being basically a large concrete room, not too loud.

The menu is mostly composed of shared dishes (meze) and so we skipped the entrees and ordered a melange of shared bites. I think we did a good job in getting the full range of what Boukies offered in ordering the greek gigante beans stewed with spinach and feta, saganaki (baked cheese) with roasted red pepper compote, grilled octopus, pulled lamb sandwiches with yogurt-dill sauce, fried potatoes with sheeps milk cheese and oregano, and a custard filled baked phyllo with honey and cinnamon that was like the Greek version of a cannoli.

*gigante beans stewed with feta and spinach*

The variety of small plates from different regions of Greece was very impressive, exposing me to new flavors and ingredients but most importantly everything we ordered was tasty and delicious. It would be pretty hard to not find at least a few favorites here.

Boukies (and their sister restaurant Pylos- a personal fave) is a great place to get a taste of Greek cuisine, enjoy Greek wines you’ve probably never heard of, and not break the bank with your friends. The space is big (they also have ample outdoor seating) and there are more than few tables for 8-10 people and booths that can be converted into larger tables, so definitely think of Boukies for your next party.

This past Sunday while everyone was sipping margaritas and dipping chips into guacamole for Cinco de Mayo I was eating gluten-free pizza at Wild in the West Village with my friend Jason. I wanted something simple and fresh as I had indulged a little bit over the weekend and Wild hit the spot.

Previously Slice (a vegan pizza place), Wild has evolved into a restaurant that uses fresh, local, seasonal ingredients and clean toppings in their pizzas, salads and desserts. And everything is made gluten-free! Including the pizzas, which taste like a regular flatbread crust. They have stayed true to their former roots by using mostly vegan ingredients and giving diners the option of vegan cheese on their pizzas (no thank you, I like the real stuff) and the only meat options they offer are bacon and sweet capicola.

The scene is rustic, warm, cute and quite small (roughly 6 two top tables and 2 8 seat communal tables), but they’ve got outdoor seating and so when it’s a little warmer, I’ll be outside eating and people watching on Hudson.

from Wild’s Facebook Page

A note….if you are looking for a quick meal then Wild is not for you…. we ordered two pizzas and it took nearly 45 minutes to get our food in a restaurant half full but it was worth the wait. It had been a long weekend for my friend and I so we didn’t drink (they only have a beer and wine license) but I suggest ordering a glass of wine or one of their NY state beers while you wait.

The menu is small but creative with just eight salads to start, eight pizzas (personal or share size) and three desserts. We ordered two personal sized pizzas (the roasted vegetable and sweet capicola) and figured if we were still hungry we could always order more (we didn’t).

When our pizza finally came out they were a sight to behold….the seasonal vegetable pizza looked like a garden on a plate with asparagus, fennel, cauliflower, peppers, and mushrooms sprinkled over a thick homemade pesto and the sweet capicola was a cheesy dream slathered with thin slices of capicola and peppered with tiny cherry peppers.

The pizza is more of a flatbread than a pizza crust as its very crunchy and much thinner than your average pie. I felt less heavy after I finished eating it but definitely full and loved that it tasted so fresh and was devoid of extra salt (they let the ingredients really shine through). You know you are eating something bad when it’s pizza but at Wild that’s not the case. If this is healthy pizza then I’ll be here a lot…I just wish they delivered to me (I live on Hudson but south of Canal) but I am just shy of their delivery range. Guess I’ll just have to bike up there and back to get my Wild fix.

Like everyone else, I am bombarded with daily emails from news, shopping, and food list serves and while I delete most of them (shouldn’t I just unsubscribe?), I look forward to the weekly emails from Faith of The Kitchn the most.

A few times a week they send me recipes and this past week’s featured a heavenly rhubarb crumble that made me immediately say….I have to cook that asap. So last night as the beautiful weather bid adieu (it’s supposed to rain for the next 7 days???) I holed up in my kitchen and made their rhubarb crumble but put a little spin on it.

Instead of making one big “pie” I made them in individual ramekins so that I could share easily. My boyfriend doesn’t like sweets nearly as much as I do and I can’t eat this entire thing on my own so my doormen, friends, and co-workers get homemade treats every so often

I also made it gluten-free as my kitchen is a dedicated celiac friendly zone and put in a few generous squeezes from my freshly zested lemons. The result? Seasonally sensational! Go wild with rhubarb in this dessert. Thanks Faith!

Ingredients:

1 Gluten-Free pre-made pie crust (get it at Whole Foods in the freezer aisle)

1/2 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour

1/4 cup almond meal/flour

1/3 cup lightly packed brown sugar

1/2 tsp salt

4 TBL chilled unsalted butter (cut into small cubes)

1 3/4 pounds (6 cups) fresh rhubarb, ends trimmed and cut into 3/4 inch pieces

3/4 cup white granulated sugar

1 TBL lemon zest

2 TBL cornstarch

To Make:

Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees

Thaw frozen pie crust and in line bottom of individual foil ramekins with thick layer of pie crust

In a small mixing bowl whisk flour, almond flour, brown sugar and 1/4 tsp salt and work the butter into the mixture with your hands until large clumps form and place in refrigerator

In a large mixing bowl combine rhubarb, white sugar, cornstarch and 1/4 tsp salt and toss well

With a slotted spoon, fill ramekins with rhubarb mixture to the top

Remove flour mixture and cover top of rhubarb with the “crumble”

Bake for one hour or until topping is bubbling and crust is browned

Remove and cool completely before serving

Serve by itself or with whipped cream

Enjoy!

Finally! Ice cream season is here! But I’ll admit my guilty pleasure has me carrying a cone on both the coldest and hottest days I love it so much. I have some favorite ice cream shops in the city (Emack & Bolio’s, Blue Marble, Ample Hills, Van Leeuwen, and Sundaes & Cones) but love finding new spots to enjoy this icy treat. After happy hour drinks with friends at The Pitch & Fork (2 for 1 drinks!) on the UES, a friend suggested we hit up Sedutto.

Sedutto’s blows Baskin Robbins away with their huge selection of unique ice cream flavors which aren’t just limited to what is in the front cases as they have even more hiding in the back! The flavors are bold (wine ice cream anyone?) and there is something for everyone. The service is great….we had a nice chat with the owners friendly brother who gave us the rundown of the operation and let us taste whatever we wanted (I only had four samples!).

For my first Sedutto’s experience I went with cookie dough on the bottom and a crunchy peanut butter on the top of the waffle cone. For just $4 this thing was HUGE. And this is how I like my ice cream…. hard enough so you can bite into it easily, full of flavor, and oh so creamy and smooth.

How are there not lines out the door for Sedutto? Last night in Chelsea there was a line 20 person deep for 16 Handles which I know isn’t technically the same thing but ??????.

Sedutto’s is a classic ice-cream parlor, meaning no gimmicks, no themes, reasonable prices, and absolutely no pretension. They are known for their ice cream but they also have frozen yogurt (some that is mystifyingly non-fat?), and milkshakes. My only gripe is that I wish there was a location downtown so I could enjoy it more often but since I go uptown twice a week for work I will have to make a Sedutto’s trip a weekly thing!

The past weekend was filled with engagement parties, birthday parties, and goodbye parties and this body has simply had enough. Two nights ago I found myself with absolutely no appetite at all and figured it’s probably because I’ve eaten/dranken my body weight since Friday and this girl just couldn’t take it anymore.

So it was time to kick the butter and sweets to the curb and make something healthy for myself this week. On Monday, The Today Show featured salmon skewers with artichoke hearts and sun-dried tomatoes that looked good and easy to make plus I haven’t made fish for a while. But instead of making skewers (I had a deboned and deskinned filet in the fridge) I made a bowl full of gluten-free penne pasta, cut the salmon into chunks, sautéed the artichoke hearts and sun-dried tomatoes and then added them all together to make a nice little meal for the boyfriend and I. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

1 bag gluten-free penne pasta

1 can artichoke hearts, drained

1/3 cup sun-dried tomatoes, julienned

1 8 oz filet of salmon, cut into 1 inch wide chunks

1 TBL garlic, minced

1 TBL red pepper flakes

salt and pepper

To Make:

Over medium heat, saute salmon in 1 TBL olive oil and cook 1/2 way through, remove and place on plate lined with paper towel to drain excess oil

Make pasta according to directions, drain and set aside

Heat 1 TBL olive oil over medium heat and add garlic

add artichoke hearts and sun-dried tomatoes and cook for 2 minutes

add pasta and stir for one minute

season with salt/pepper and add red pepper flakes

add salmon and cook for 1 minute

plate and enjoy!

Opened in 1968 (when the original London location opened) Mr. Chow fuses together fine dining and authentic Beijing cuisine. With 5 locations throughout the country (including two in NYC) it’s a mecca for people with deep pockets and an appreciation for a whole lot of swank.

I live right above (ok 5 floors up) the Tribeca restaurant and have had a little chip on my shoulder in regards to the place since I moved in. Mr. Chow is not my typical scene and I had very strong feelings about not wanting to ever try what I deemed “overpriced PF Chang’s.” But I’ve experienced a few surprises in the last few months and so I stopped turning my nose at this place, gave in and joined my friends who dine here every Sunday night.

The restaurant is slick and lavish with a polished black bar, giant cherry blossom trees, pressed white tablecloths, fine white china, and an energetic atmosphere. The service is very formal but not stuffy with bow-tied and white jacket waiters catering to your every need. The waiters are pleasant and highly attentive, giving you space while also making sure every plate is cleared, every water glass is filled, every utensil is clean and that you are never without a cocktail or glass of wine.

The food is served family style and is absolutely superb and prepared to perfection. Back in the day they had no menus and just asked you what kind of meats you like and what you were allergic to. Nowadays, with us climbing out of a recession, there is a need for menus with prices . Pick whatever you want on the menu and they will portion it out for you and your guests so that everyone gets the same amount of food and can actually try everything.

My personal favorites are the soup dumplings (Shanghai Little Dragons), fiery beef (filet mignon cubes fried and drenched in a spicy sauce), crispy seaweed, chicken satays (in the famous Mr. Chow’s cream sauce), black squid ink rice noodles (hand made in house), squab with lettuce wraps and beijing chicken. Do yourself a favor and bring non-discriminate eaters so that you can order a bunch of items (have everyone choose a few) and have yourself a party with chinese delights.

I used to think that you didn’t go to Mr. Chow’s for the food, that you go there to see and be seen because it’s so trendy and chic. And while the people watching is top-notch you can’t not give a shout out to the food. And let’s face it people wouldn’t spend this much money on crap food, no matter how swanky the place is. Yes it is ridiculously expensive and so it’s not an everyday dining destination (at least for me). Any negative thoughts I had prior to my three recent meals have gone out the window and I’ll be back….when my bank account recovers

For the past few years my grandmother has hoarded recipes she thinks I would enjoy or wants me to learn how to make and sends them in bulk every few months. Cute right? Well this recipe came awhile ago but with artichokes showing up in the produce aisle it was a no brainer for this weeks post.

The recipe called for everything but the crab and it was my grandmother who had the genius idea of adding it to the mix. You can make it a little easier if you want and just substitute pre-seasoned breadcrumbs and forgo the garlic parsley and cheese but fresh ingredients are much much better

Ingredients:

4 artichokes

2 cups breadcrumbs (I used Glutino gluten-free breadcrumbs)

1 cup fresh crabmeat

4 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

1/4 cup water

1/4 cup parsley, chopped

1 1/2 cup olive oil

To Make:

Prepare the artichokes by trimming leaves down to where the inner leaves start to turn tender flat across the top with kitchen shears

remove the stem, inner choke and dry outer leaves

boil lightly in salted water for 10 minutes, drain and cool

in a mixing bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, crab, garlic, cheese, water parsley and olive oil

pre-heat oven to 350 degrees

part artichoke petals and fill with the crab/breadcrumb mixture

place in a deep baking dish and add 1 cup water to the pan (enough to fill about 1/8 the height of dish)

drizzle more olive oil on the artichokes, cover with foil and bake for 30-45 minutes

remove from oven and serve immediately

enjoy!

It’s incredible and downright weird that Rouge et Blanc received 2 stars from the NY Times in 2011 and yet you can easily get a reservation. This unpretentious spot serves up an east-meets-west fusion of French and Vietnamese cuisine in small appetizer portions perfect for sharing and a great way to get a good taste of most of the menu.

The restaurant has the look and feel of a French colonial tavern from 1940s Saigon and oozes romanticism. And although the ambiance and service are top-notch (most servers speak French which helped as we dined with our French friends who didn’t speak English), it is the wine list and menu that should put this place at the top of any New Yorker’s food list.

The wine list is all French, personally curated by its owner Thomas Cregan, who won The Best Sommelier in America Competition 2011. And the food is a perfect blend of French technique and Vietnamese flavors encapsulated in an unusual but very tasty menu (duck hearts, prawn and pork cheek skewers, crispy broccoli and kale). My favorite item is the confit pork terrine which is more of a shredded pulled pork with smoked garlic and pea tendrils…. and it’s amazing.

How do more people not know about this place? It’s great for a romantic date or for a small group of friends or couples and although it is a bit expensive, the experience is well worth it .

Simply put… you have not lived until you’ve had a sandwich at Alidoro.

Ali Doro is the perfect epitome of the largely only New York idea that one can treat their customers any way one wants, as long as what they are serving is perfect (it is). Alidoro is kinda of like the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld where they kick you out for asking for recommendations, taking too much time when ordering or talking too loud. But they can do whatever they want and tell me however they want me to act as I am at the mercy of them until I get my beloved sandwich!

During the week lines form out the door making your lunch endeavor a long, but well worth it process. I go on Saturday afternoons when you will almost always have someone in front of you, but never wait more than 10 minutes. Consider yourself lucky if you work or live nearby…. while they don’t deliver, they do accept phone orders so you can skip the line!

One should note that the menu is overwhelming; they’ve got over 40 sandwich creations and you can also make your own. So I suggest checking out the menu prior to your visit so you can at least have an idea of what you want. Otherwise you will be left staring at the menu way longer than you should. It is impossible not to find a sandwich to love because everything is wonderful.

The sandwiches aren’t cheap (averaging $11 a pop) but they are not small either (about the size of my forearm) so trust me when I say you won’t need anything else to eat until much, much later that night. My personal favorite is “The Pavarotti” with salami, smoked mozzarella, sundried tomatoes, artichokes and sweet roasted peppers but I also like “The Dino” with prosciutto, arugula, smoked mozzarella and sundried tomatoes and “The Marco Polo” with fresh mozzarella, hot peppers and arugula. It doesn’t matter what sandwich you get because it will be good. With each layer you bite into an explosion of flavors where, even though it’s all packed in there, you get to taste each fresh and delicious ingredient separately.

Alidoro is only open for five hours (from 11:30-4:30) Monday-Saturday and is cash only. Before a trip to Alidoro make sure you’ve got your game face on (i.e. a hungry stomach) and prepare yourself mentally for the best Italian sandwich you’ve ever had, seriously.
