Last weekend en route back to the city from a glorious wedding weekend in The Hamptons the boyfriend and I stopped at The Milk Pail in Water Mill. Now I’ve been to The Milk Pail many times in the summer (their pies are crazy delicious), but never in the fall. Being my favorite season and because it was an absolutely gorgeous day, we made a quick stop en route to lunch in East Hampton so I could indulge in a little pre-meal treat
I would have loved to grab a bag, head out to their orchards and pick apples fresh from the tree but we didn’t have time for that and so I grabbed a few Honeycrisp apples, a half-gallon of their fresh made apple cider (made from their trees), and a fresh apple cider donut. Now “fresh” is so overused that it can now mean anything but let me tell you….this donut was soo fresh that I watched it be made and had to wait a minute until I could eat it, the thing was so hot! Now I ate the apple and cider later (at home yesterday) but inhaled the donut moments after stepping foot into our car, naturally
I’ve been sooo good at going gluten-free and have been very strict about it but was rendered completely powerless when it came to this donut. There is just something about apple cider donuts that makes me incredibly happy…and let’s face it my self-control borders on non-existent. I think I go gaga for them because they’re such a rarity (an apple cider donut in July? there is just something so wrong with that!), and besides the only ones I like are fresh-baked and come from a place like The Milk Pail or at a stand in the Greenmarket.
Like I said, I housed the donut, but was able to enjoy each bite (I know it doesn’t seem possible but it was); a light crispy fried outside and spiced appley fluffy cake inside. It was probably best that I saved the donut to eat inside the car and not the moment I purchased it because I would have bought a dozen….and eaten them all by myself on the ride back to the city. It was well worth the quick detour in my gluten-free diet, and now I have the next 5 weeks to savor, remember and look forward to more apple cider donuts when November 1st comes (when my diet goes kaput)!
The Milk Pail is a bit of a hike if you live in the city but if you find yourself in The Hamptons this fall…it must be on your list of to-dos! I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that the place is pricey— I purchased a half-gallon of apple cider, three apples and an apple cider donut for $12 which surprised me a bit, but hey it’s The Hamptons so you kinda need to know what you are getting yourself into!
